It is so exciting when we have the opportunity to impact the City of Chicago with our work. The West Expansion was such a project. Each component and phase of this amazing and complicated project was orchestrated for smooth schedule transition and progress – just clearing the site so the project could move forward required a series of projects enacted in the correct sequence. It was a pleasure and a true learning experience to work with an amazing team of professionals to develop this project.
McCormick Place West Expansion
The $850 million over 700,000 sf West Expansion of McCormick Place was a five-year, multi-phase expansion and new construction project. Due to the massive scope of the project, MPEA required an experienced and attentive project team. Ten qualified firms in Chicago, including Cotter, formed the Mc4West joint venture. This design/build team led the project and ultimately delivered it on budget, and four months ahead of schedule, in part due to a proactive permitting strategy that allowed construction to start three months ahead of schedule.
Cotter managed the permit process for over 200 permits, including the regulatory approvals associated with the innovative lake-outfall stormwater management tunnel. Cotter provided project management services for the environmental work and demolition of existing buildings to clear the way for construction, as well as for the $18 million contract to construct 40 elevators and 30 escalators. Cotter also managed 30 artists and the artwork installation for the project.
