The Episcopal Diocese of Chicago needed facility improvements to support their important work in the community. In 2010, they hired Cotter Consulting to oversee the construction of the St. James Commons multi-phase project.
The first phase of the project included a new plaza and landscaping that connects the Diocesan Headquarters and St. James Cathedral. The reconstructed and landscaped plaza includes a water feature and outdoor gathering spaces. The first phase also included interior renovations of the first floor mechanical systems, a new elevator, and refurbishing of the first floor interiors to provide a new commercial kitchen, lobby, welcoming area, classrooms, offices, meeting and large gathering areas.
The second phase included renovation to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors of the headquarters building. Former storage and office spaces were adaptively reused to provide retreat lodging quarters, meeting spaces, offices, and administrative spaces.
Cotter’s careful planning maintained separation of construction areas, providing a peaceful environment conducive to work and worship and allowed services and events to continue during renovations.
